Rules and Handicaps
The Edgewater Golf Group follows the Rules of Golf--2019 Edition--from the USGA.
Local rules include free drops from all landscaping, free drops for several days after the application of fresh pine straw, and relief from divots and patchy ground in the fairways (USGA Perferred Lies). All drops, free or with penalty, should be taken no closer to the hole. Since we get so much rain, it is often within the rules to clean mud from your ball without penalty. Out of bounds are marked by street curbs, white stakes, the railway fence on #6, and the fences and cart barn on #7.
We use a modified Stapleford scoring system that has served us well: 10 points: hole in one 8 points: eagle 6 points: birdie 4 points: par 2 points: bogie 1 point: double bogie Golfers can only receive a gross score of triple bogey (for 0 points).
Winners for each round receive money based on their skill level for the day. Winning categories include Low Man (player with the most points over his/her handicap); closest to the pin on holes #2 and #8; winning team (too complicated to explain here); and, positive rounds over one's handicap.
Players are awarded 2 points for each positive round (a point score higher than their handicap), 2 points for a closest to the pin, 4 points for a team win, and 5 points for being Low Man for the round.
Handicaps are based on the best 7 out of the last 10 scores for each player.
Players' scores for the last ten rounds are posted on this website, along with current points needed to break even for each player (basically, your handicap, derived by an average of your best scores on the last 7 of 10 rounds). Also posted are running point totals for the year for each player in each category of Low Man, Team Wins, Pins won, Positive Rounds and Total Points and Standings from these categories (as well as money won).
New players to the group must have three scores in our handicapping system in order to qualify for group wagering.
