Legendary Friends

Jimmy Manasco

Jimmy "The Blade" Manasco,long-time Edgewater Golf Group member, Navy veteran and math teacher at Edgewater High School, died December 26th, 2022.

Steve McKinney

Steve McKinney, long time Edgewater Golf Group Member, Orange County Public School teacher and administrator (for over 35 years) died October 21, 2022. For decades, Steve was a fixture at our Sea Island weekend and tournament as Chief Cook and Bottle Washer. Indeed, many of our  memories of Steve are of him drinking wine and cooking dinner at Sea Island; and, though he might have wanted you out of the kitchen, he still made you feel welcome. For many years, he was the host and life of the Nineteenth Hole after golf at Dubsdread--opening his home, his deck and his beer 'fridge after the round.

J

James "Jim" Cooper

Jim was a long-time Winter Park resident, a graduate of Rollins College and a local developer of homes and property all over Central Florida.  He shaped many parts of our area and was a past President of the Orlando Builders Association.  Jim played with our group for many years until his eyesight and other physical handicaps kept him off the links, jokingly calling himself Mr. Magoo. That's the kind of guy he was, an important person in the community and in the business world, yet humble enough to spend time with us. There were also those times when he opened up his house for the group to meet after a round. He'd leave his garage open with access to his frig (pre-stocked with beer). He had a life well lived, the essence of humble and kind.

James "Jim" Knoblauch

Born and raised in Pennsylvania, Jim was a youthful, athletic All Star. After many rough jobs in Pennsylvania's coal industry and in construction, Jim began his career in the insurance industry with his goal to help others find financial Independence. Loud, boisterous, opinionated and competitive, when his health allowed, Jim lead the WP9's Men's golf association for years and was a stalwart member of the Edgewater Golf Group, rarely missing our Wednesday-Friday matches. In his later years, Jim faced a number of medical setbacks, many almost taking his life, earning him the moniker Lazarus, until the final health crisis took him on December 30, 2021. He played golf and poker like a champion, no doubt winning one hell of a Texas Hold ‘em up in heaven.

Bruce “Air” Bartholomew

Bruce spent most of his career in education at Edgewater High School, helping create the Engineering, Computer and Science program (along with Henry Pfingstag, Joe O., his wife Leila Parrish and others), at the time one of the most innovative magnet programs in the state.  He was also one of the original members of the Edgewater Golf Group, playing with us for over thirty years and joining in the annual Sea Island Tournament for decades. Known for his “rabbit ears” and irritability on the golf course, he often would throw his clubs in frustration after a poor shot, helicoptering them into lakes and woods, earning him the nickname “Air.”  Some of his clubs may still be out there. He died in 2020 from Alzheimer’s and Covid 19.

Gene "Secret Agent 007" Myatt

February 28 at 3:00PM Gene Shotten (Shaky) Myatt went to a better place, free of the shakes and no more pain.  He was a great person, father, grandfather and a hell of a baseball player and will surely be missed.  His ashes will be scattered at Yankee Stadium. He had a great sense of humor and wasn’t above sending a random barb your way, but you couldn’t be insulted; it just made you laugh. He was one of those rare people that are so easy to love. Gene exemplified the lessons of sportsmanship, perseverance and resiliency. If we pass the way he endured on to others, he lives on.

Robert "Bob" Peterson

Bob Peterson was a long-time educator and golf coach at Lake Brantley High School.  He loved a good political argument.  As a history teacher he could quote the correct documents that underlay his defense of our democracy and his opinions.  On the day of his death, Bob birdied the first hole at WP9, the last he ever played, and died right there on the course of a heart attack. Certainly not the time he wanted to go, but it was a classic end for a dedicated golfer.

Robert "Bob" Dolce

Dolce, Robert 82, passed away Friday November 8, 2013. Bob was born in Buffalo NY October 8, 1931 and grew up in Rochester NY. He graduated from SUNY at Cortland NY where he also played as quarterback of the football team. He later went on to earn a Masters in Administration from Rollins College. Bob joined Edgewater High Schools teaching and coaching staff in 1967 and served the school and community there till 1994 where he was head football coach many years. His love for sports and the outdoors was never ending. Bob always found time to play golf as well, often with large groups of friends at Dubsdread or the Winter Park Golf Club. Thanks Coach you will be missed!
